Seaford Homecoming 2007

UTS at Homecoming

On Saturday, October 13, The United Teachers of Seaford joined the Seaford Community for a fun-filled day of Homecoming traditions. The teachers gathered with students and parents behind the Seaford Public Library to march through the town in the annual homecoming parade. The parade was led by Grand Marshal Joe Manso, longtime High School Band Director, followed by floats bearing the theme "Seaford High School Turns 50." The floats were created by the Harbor, Manor, and Middle schools as well as each High School class. The parade finished up at The Raymond J. Buckley Field of Dreams for the traditional varsity football game. The Vikings beat Cold Spring Harbor to conclude a memorable weekend wishing Seaford a Happy 50th Birthday! Thanks to all who turned out to support our schools and celebrate!

A Weekend at Gurney's

UTS members at Gurney's

Four members of the UTS Executive Board braved the winds and rain of Hurricane Noel and headed east for NYSUT's conference at Gurney's Inn in Montauk. Officers Mike Flynn and James Pollin attended workshops with our Labor Relations Specialist Mary Meyers on Political Action. They discussed ways our local can get more involved with budget votes and elections. Middle School building representative Patty Gilroy learned about FMLA, elements of the Taylor Law and other legal matters in the Workplace Issues workshop. Laura Maciag, the newest member of the Executive Board, attended Frontline Representation where she was introduced to methods on handling daily challenges of representing members in the workplace. Laura, Patty, Mike and James all felt it was an informative and helpful weekend and they look forward to sharing new ideas with our membership.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS BOND PASSES!

Yes - 1,091 / No - 627

The Seaford community once again came out with Viking Pride and supported our schools, teachers and students by passing the Capital Improvements Bond. The district is now able to make many needed repairs, upgrades and additions to all four buildings throughout the district. Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time at the phone banks, and to Marie Jones (and her ad committee) who published a reminder to the community in the Wantagh-Seaford Citizen.

UTS Joins WTA

On Wednesday, November 28, Seaford teachers joined forces with educators throughout Long Island to support the Wyandanch Teachers' Association in their three-year battle for a contract. The Wyandanch teachers asked locals to help picket a Board of Education meeting being held that night in hopes of a speedy resolution to their negotiations. UTS members Lori Fritsch, Patty Gilroy, Laura Maciag, Dan Hayden, James Pollin and Bob DiGiovanna joined over 300 professionals to help in any way they could, and remembered what it was like for us only a few months ago. Wyandanch teacher Kathy Evans (pictured above) and the other WTA members were extremely thankful for the support they received. Good luck to the Wyandanch Teachers in getting the fair contract they deserve.
